Why I Never Run Google Ads
I love coding, blogging, and YouTube videos. Yet, whenever I try to get any revenue from any of the three, I face Google Ads as the first option, and every single time, I decide not to use Google Ads. I sacrificed the potential profit from mobile applications, webpages, blogging platforms, and my youtube videos. I also didn’t go into many of my thoughts of new projects as they weren’t profitable without Google Ads. In this article, I will explain why.
Google Ads Bussiness Model
First, let me explain how I understand the Google Ads Bussiness Model. Google Ads is simply the Ads iframes added to any website or mobile application. Also, when it comes to YouTube, they have Video Ads that are injected inside the video. The Ad is chosen based on a collection of things that no one knows but Google. It might be the user’s interest, the country you are browsing from, your home country, recent search, the money paid on the Ad, the Adwords that Ad creator chose, and whatever else Google decides.
And that’s briefly why I don’t love Google Ads, the business model! To illustrate more why here you are:
1. I love to be conscious
I am the kind of person who loves to know the details of everything I am doing. So If I am getting revenue from Ads, I need to know what those Ads. I can’t just accept getting money, no matter how much they are, from a secret algorithm that makes me help in promoting some Ads around.
Google is deciding alone what Ads that might appear, and I can’t live with this.
2. I have values
I have values about every single aspect of my life. So how come will I promote something blindly, I can’t live with the idea that I might have promoted something against one of my values. Also, I am Muslim. This brings more and more values that most Ads out there in the world don’t adhere to. Some friends of mine suggest blocking some categories of Ads to reach this, but it is impossible to do that. Google Ads might be offering an option to block alcohol-related Ads (as I am against promoting alcohol for example), yet how will I block Ads that use women as objects in their content? Also my values against capitalism, and how most of the Ads pressure society to turn their wants into needs. Also, having videos that are against minimalism while watching a video about minimalism. Many examples out there, Google Ads can’t help people who love to stick and be conscious about their values.
3. User’s interests is a lie
When discussing this topic with a friend earlier, she told me that what Ads appear is none of my business, as Google lets the user sees Ads that are near to his interest anyway, so he is not seeing something that will annoy him. It is kind of his choice. I believe this is a rumor.
I am a user already, and it happens many times that I see Ads on Youtube Videos that are not for me. Sometimes they are against my interests as well. I am on a sugar-free healthy diet, yet I saw many times Ads of unhealthy food, on a healthy meal prep video! Also, I am against usury, yet I see many Usury promoting ads whenever I am watching a financial-related video.
Yet, Food is one of my interests, but healthy food, not food in general. Yes, financial topics are part of my interests, but when they comply with my Islamic values.
So Google interests clusters are not always right, and they fail many times.
4. Google Adwords
I don’t know how Google Adwords works, but it happens many times that I feel attacked using these Adwords. As a Muslim, many times I would get an Ad that is addressed against Muslims. It is totally unbelievable how this happens. People use Adwords to reach people they want, not to describe their Ads only.
So I can never trust what is appearing, it might be something that using my privacy to attack me. So how will I trust that I am not doing the same with others when I am gaining money from these Ads?
5. Blocking a specific ad doesn’t always work
Earlier, I wanted to test if you can choose that Ads appear, so I enabled Google Ads on my Blogspot blog. I asked my friends to inform me of any bad Ads appear around, and they thankfully did. I took the URL from them and blocked it from the dashboard as all manuals describe, and surprisingly they didn’t stop this Ad to appear again and again to my friends! I don’t get why did this happen, but it pissed me off.
Last, I need more control
Because of all the points above, I really wished we had another business model that pays content creators, yet while giving them control. I wish we can choose more freely and know more freely what Ads do appear.
I love the idea of Ads and promoting others. I love the idea that you get paid by someone else but the normal users. Yet, We need a new business model that saves our values while helping the internet to be a better place. I keep brainstorming from time to time, searching for that new successful model, but I didn’t find one yet. Until then, I will never run Google Ads for money.
